Cervical Radiculopathy

This condition is an irritation or compression of one or more nerve roots in the cervical spine. Because these nerves travel to the shoulders, arms and hands, an injury in the cervical spine can cause symptoms.

What is a Pinched Nerve?

Cervical radiculopathy can occur when a nerve in the neck branching away from the spinal cord becomes compressed or irritated — hence the name “pinched nerve.” Often a pinched nerve in the neck can happen due to a person's age or the wear that has occurred to their body. However, a pinched nerve can happen to a younger person which is usually the result of an injury like a herniated disk.

Treatment & Next Steps

The cause of the pinched nerve will dictate the treatment. Sometimes the sensation goes away on its own after some time but often the use of medication and physical therapy with a back pain specialist is the ideal treatment. With medication and the right treatment, this condition often is eliminated in a few days or weeks. However, it is always best to seek medical attention to make sure that the root cause of the pinched nerve is receiving the treatment that it needs.

What Should I Do Next

If you think that you might have a pinched nerve, schedule an appointment with a doctor. After a physical exam they may conduct further tests to better understand what is happening in your neck:

  • X-rays
  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
  • EMG
