Neck Pain

Most people will have neck pain at some time in their life. Fortunately, it usually goes away in a day or two, with a little help from pain medicine and a good night’s rest. However, some neck pain is “chronic”, i.e. it doesn’t go away. Chronic neck pain can dramatically reduce your quality of life. Activities you once took for granted become impossible to do without immense pain. Picking up a small child, playing a sport, even sitting comfortably in a chair, can all become painful challenges. In some instances, the cause of the neck pain can also lead to numbness or tingling in your arms, hands, legs or feet (these symptoms are serious and require immediate medical attention).

The good news is that neck pain, and related symptoms, can usually be greatly reduced (or even resolved) through non-operative medical treatments, and if that fails, through surgery. The surgical techniques available today to correct neck problems are light-years ahead of what was available only 30 years ago. Surgical procedures can be performed through small incisions, and in many instances the patient can go home on the day of surgery, or at least within 24 hours.
