Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) is a way of doing spine surgery through very small incisions. It has become increasingly popular in the last ten years. Traditionally, spine surgery was performed through large incisions, so the spine surgeon could see the anatomy being worked on. However, the large incision often made for lengthy, painful recoveries for the patients. MISS has found ways to overcome these problems.

During an MISS procedure, the surgeon will use specially designed tools (including special tubes and retractors), and image guided technology, to enable him to do the entire surgery through very small incisions. Each incision is usually about the area of a large thumb nail.
